BPUB Invests $5.19 Million in Old Highway 77 Reconstruction
BROWNSVILLE, TX (October 15, 2024) — The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is excited to announce a major investment of $5.19 million in the reconstruction of Old Highway 77 funded by BPUB’s Capital Improvement Fund. This project, with a total cost of $13.95 million, is set to begin this October and aims to significantly improve the infrastructure and quality of life for Brownsville residents.
This project represents a strong collaboration between BPUB and the City of Brownsville, showcasing how we go beyond providing utilities. Together, we’re enhancing our community through essential infrastructure projects.
BPUB representative, Dr. Daisy Zamora, Board Secretary/Treasurer, proudly joined city officials at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Old Highway 77 project.
Marilyn D. Gilbert, BPUB General Manager & CEO, expressed her pride in the team’s efforts, saying, “Our employees are dedicated to ensuring the success of these utility improvements, which are crucial for the overall project and the community we serve.”
The reconstruction will happen in phases, starting with water and sewer utility work, followed by storm sewer installations and street construction. The project will transform the roadway from FM 802 to Morrison Road into an urban roadway with curb and gutter systems and drainage improvements. Key utility upgrades include extending an 8-inch waterline, replacing a 12-inch AC line with PVC, and upsizing an existing 8-inch force main.
Mayor John Cowen, Jr. praised the partnership, stating, “It’s wonderful to see organizations come together to make Brownsville a better city. Collaborating on projects like this, is vital for our community’s success.”
The BPUB Board approved the reimbursement for these utility improvements during the September 9, 2024 Board meeting, reinforcing BPUB’s commitment to the City of Brownsville and its residents.
