Service Line Inspections
At BPUB, we understand the importance of ensuring your water service line is safe and lead-free. Here are your options for inspecting your water service line:
Self Visual Inspection
You can inspect your water service line if you can access exposed pipes, such as those in your meter box or near a pressure-reducing valve. Here’s how:
- Clean the Pipe: Start by wiping the pipe with a cloth. For heavy dirt or corrosion, use a wire brush or fine-grit sandpaper.
- Scratch Test: Carefully scratch the outer layer with a hard tool, such as a screwdriver, to reveal the bare metal.
- Magnet Test: Use a strong magnet to check if the material is magnetic.
- Document: Take clear pictures of the pipe material and submit this information using our Service Line Reporting Form.
Note: Conducting this inspection is at your own risk. BPUB is not liable for any damage or errors in material identification.
Licensed Plumber Inspection
Alternatively, you can hire a licensed plumber to perform the inspection. This option ensures professional handling and accurate identification of pipe materials.
Identifying Pipe Materials
- PVC, PEX, or Plastic: Blue, white, or gray; non-magnetic.
- Copper: Reddish color; non-magnetic.
- Galvanized: Shiny gray/silver (steel) or brown/reddish (iron); magnetic.
- Lead: Dull gray; non-magnetic.
Reporting Results
Whether you conduct the inspection yourself or hire a plumber, it’s crucial to report the results to comply with local, state, and federal regulations. Use our Service Line Reporting Form to submit your findings.
