BPUB elevated water storage tank demolition underway

Demolition began Oct. 2 on one of Brownsville’s familiar landmarks – the elevated water storage tank located on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) campus. The tank, which had been decommissioned, is being taken down over a 45-day period as part of BPUB’s continued investment in modernizing the city’s water infrastructure.

The UTRGV tank was replaced by the new Southmost Elevated Water Storage Tank, which officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in November 2023. The new 2-million-gallon tank strengthens Brownsville’s water system by improving storage capacity, service reliability, and water pressure in surrounding areas.

The Southmost Elevated Tank also replaced another elevated tank demolished in 2018, consolidating into a single, more efficient facility designed to serve current and future demand.

While the removal of the UTRGV tank marks the end of an era, BPUB recognizes the significance of these structures to the community. For many residents, the city’s elevated tanks have long been landmarks that defined Brownsville’s skyline.

“Landmarks like these hold special meaning for people who have grown up seeing them every day,” said Marilyn D. Gilbert, BPUB General Manager & CEO. “As we say goodbye to an older part of our system, we’re also investing in Brownsville’s future by building stronger, more resilient infrastructure to serve generations to come.”

Elevated storage tanks store large amounts of water and ensure a reliable and constant water supply, especially during peak demand or emergencies. They help create pressure in the water distribution system, allowing water to flow to homes and businesses with adequate force. Elevated storage tanks also help regulate and optimize the operation of water treatment plants and distribution systems.

As part of this demolition, there is a road closure impacting Ridgely Road, between East 18th Street and East 21st Street. Motorists are asked to stay vigilant for road signs in these areas.
