Yellow Water – What You Need To Know

BPUB is aware of recent reports of yellow discoloration in tap water in certain areas of Brownsville. The issue maybe caused by manganese, a mineral naturally found in groundwater. We’re working hard to resolve the problem and want to keep you informed every step of the way.

What’s Causing the Yellow Tint?

The yellow tint in the water is usually caused by manganese, a naturally occurring mineral common in groundwater. While low levels of manganese do not pose a health risk, they can cause aesthetic issues, including discoloration, laundry/fixture staining, and taste or odor.

However, there are several other factors that can lead to water discoloration. Corrosion or disturbances within the water system can release accumulated rust, scale, or sediment into the water supply. In addition, aged water heaters or faucets that are infrequently used may impact the taste and odor of your water and contribute to discoloration. Routine activities such as hydrant flushing, nearby construction, or water main breaks can also temporarily stir up sediments and minerals in the water mains, causing tap water to appear yellow or discolored.

Is The Water Safe?

The manganese levels causing discoloration are well below health risk thresholds and meet all TCEQ requirements for drinking water safety.
