Project Overview
The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is excited to launch the AMI Smart Meters Program as part of our commitment to upgrading our technology and providing enhanced services for you, our valued customer. Powered by our new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, this initiative will bring real-time data and greater control over your energy and water usage.

What is AMI?
Smart meters are digital devices that replace traditional meters, providing us and you with accurate, real-time data on your water and energy consumption.
This upgrade will bring several benefits to you, including:
- Daily consumption monitoring with online tools
- More accurate billing based on actual usage data
- Faster detection of outages and service issues
- Proactive notifications for leaks or high-usage situations
- Remote meter readings that eliminate the need for in-person visits
- 24/7 access to the customer portal for usage tracking

What to expect during the installation
Our Installation Partner
BPUB has contracted Allegiant Utility Services to handle all meter upgrades with professional technicians who:
Drive clearly marked vehicles
Wear official uniforms
Carry valid photo identification
Customer Communication
You'll receive a notification by mail before we begin work in your area. Our technicians will:
Attempt to notify you before starting
Leave a detailed door tag after completion
Work without needing to enter your home
Customer Preparation
To ensure a smooth upgrade:
Provide clear access to your meters
Unlock any gates
Remove obstacles or barriers
No appointment necessary
You don't need to be present
Service Impact
A brief service interruption may occur during the upgrade process.
If technicians cannot access your meter, they will leave a notice and return at a later time. The door tag left behind will include important information about your upgrade and any necessary follow-up steps.
