Project Overview

BPUB is excited to announce the launch of our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project, the result of years of dedicated planning and hard work to serve our customers better. As part of the project, we will upgrade all electric and water meters to smart meters that wirelessly transmit usage information directly to BPUB. With this real-time information, BPUB can provide more accurate billing and service alerts, allowing us to detect leaks and outages sooner, reduce the need for manual meter reads, and improve our response times.

Steps in the AMI Process

This industry-standard technology includes a system of smart meters, software, and a wireless communication network designed to enhance utility services and provide valuable benefits to our community. The process works as follows:

  1. Smart Meter Upgrade: BPUB will replace all customers' existing electric and water meters with smart meters. These smart meters will communicate usage information directly to BPUB in real-time.
  2. Communications Network: The smart meters use secure communications devices to transmit usage data and alerts to the BPUB office wirelessly. This ensures accurate and timely billing and operational efficiency.
  3. Customer Experience: Customers and staff can access energy and water usage data and receive service notifications.

The Perks of Smart Metering

In the coming years, BPUB looks forward to bringing the following benefits to our customers as part of the AMI project:

  1. Enhanced Customer Experience: With smart meters, customers will experience fewer estimated bills, leading to more accurate and reliable billing.
  2. Leak Detection & Quicker Outage Restoration: AMI technology enables BPUB to detect leaks promptly and restore outages faster, minimizing service disruptions.
  3. Online Tools to Manage Costs: AMI will allow BPUB to provide an online portal where customers can monitor and manage their energy and water consumption with detailed usage insights and real-time data, helping them save on utility costs.
  4. New Service Options: The AMI system supports new service options like pre-pay, which reduce the need for deposits and late payment fees and provide greater flexibility in managing expenses.
