Beyond providing award-winning utility services to the area, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is an active community partner through event sponsorships and employee volunteerism.
We partner with various schools to promote education outreach programs including presentations and career day events throughout the year.
Project SHARE Scholarship: Ten (10) $2,000 scholarships awarded annually to area high school seniors (including those from BISD). Coordinated with local high school counselors.
Leo the Lineman: Leo teaches students (and adults) about staying safe around electricity. Coordinated with individual campus counselors and educators.
Careers on Wheels: BPUB linemen visit schools to teach students about electrical safety. Coordinated with individual campus counselors.
STEAM Panel: BPUB sends professional engineers, mechanics, information technologists, and others to participate in career panels at local schools. BPUB professionals discuss their professions, day-to-day duties, classes needed, advice to those interested in the profession, student interest and aptitude needed for the position, colleges for this profession, and pay ranges. Coordinated with individual campus counselors.
Brownsville Scout Government Day: Local Girl and Boy Scout participants are able to come in and be “General Manager” for the day (or other BPUB professionals) and learn and report to the Brownsville City Commission on BPUB daily operations.
BPUB is present at city of Brownsville events, including the annual Hurricane Awareness Fair and National Night Out.
BPUB takes pride in its sponsorship and participation at events that celebrate local culture and traditions, including the annual Charro Days Parades, Christmas Parade, and various events hosted by community partners.
BPUB contributes to the range of community events with its Big Public Utilities Bash. A community event spotlighting our utility services for Public Power Week. Enjoy hands-on experiences, contests, learning opportunities, and family-friendly activities.
BPUB employees also see the need to help their community on a more personal level. During November, BPUB partners with local organizations that provide Christmas gifts to less fortunate children. Employees are encouraged to “adopt an angel” and help collect gifts.
We are a community-owned utility, and our participation at these events helps us connect with our customers and answer any questions they may have.
BPUB takes pride in being a community-owned utility. We hold two community tours throughout the year where we focus on each part of the utility. Participants take a behind the scenes look at what it takes to deliver your electric and water/wastewater utilities.
