Water Conservation & Emergency Preparedness: Small Steps Make a Big Impact
While the holidays bring cooler weather, conservation and preparedness remain important year-round. BPUB encourages all customers to practice simple habits that save water and help households stay ready for unexpected emergencies.
Even during cooler months, Brownsville’s water resources remain under pressure due to ongoing drought conditions along the Rio Grande and regional population growth. Small conservation habits at home help reduce overall demand on the water system, preserve supply, and strengthen our community’s long-term resilience.
BPUB also reminds customers our community remains in Stage 2 of the Drought Contingency Plan. Under Stage 2, outdoor watering is limited to the posted schedule to help preserve Brownsville’s water supply during ongoing regional drought conditions. Customers may water only on their designated days based on their home or business address.
Water Conservation Tips:
- Fix leaks around faucets, toilets, and outdoor spigots.
- Turn off the tap while brushing or shaving
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
- Water lawns sparingly and during the coolest parts of the day.
BPUB encourages all customers to take a few minutes to review their emergency plans and think ahead about things they can do to be more prepared for an emergency.
Emergency Preparedness Tips:
- Keep at least one gallon of water per person per day stored for emergencies.
- Know where your home’s water shutoff valve is located.
- Have a basic emergency kit ready, including flashlights, batteries, medications, and important documents.
- Follow BPUB on social media to stay informed during service disruptions or severe weather.
These actions help conserve our shared water resources and keep your household prepared for situations ranging from boil water notices to unexpected storms. BPUB remains committed to reliability and resilience, and we thank you for partnering with us to protect Brownsville’s future.
As temperatures drop, winter weather can create unexpected challenges for homes and businesses.
Customers can prepare by:
- Insulating exposed outdoor pipes.
- Disconnecting and draining garden hoses before a cold front.
- Protecting indoor plumbing by opening cabinet doors to let warm air circulate.
- Letting faucets drip slowly on freezing nights.
These steps help reduce damage, save water, and keep your household safe.
