BPUB asks customers without power to turn off heater, appliances

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) is asking for customers to help by turning off their heaters and unplugging any equipment that they are able, even when those customers are experiencing a power outage. Doing so should aid in getting customers restored once power is available.

Attempts to restore electrical service to certain areas have been unsuccessful because of the sudden demand for a large amount of electricity once the area is re-energized. By unplugging or turning off equipment while experiencing an outage, this helps prevent that sudden surge of electrical demand and should allow additional customers to regain service.

BPUB recommends that customers without power unplug devices and ensure their thermostat is turned off. Once service is restored, BPUB asks that customers slowly plug back in equipment and turn things on but to still try to limit use to essential activities.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) is still asking consumers to curtail electric usage as much as possible in light of record winter demand across the state. Customers are encouraged to avoid using any non-essential appliances or lighting.

BPUB recommends the following to conserve electricity:

  • Turn down thermostats to 68-degrees.
  • Close shades and blinds to reduce the amount of heat lost through windows.
  • Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and appliances.
  • Avoid using large appliances (i.e., ovens, washing machines, etc.).
  • Wear warm, comfortable clothing

If a customer continues to experience a power outage after a report that power has been restored it may likely require further troubleshooting by BPUB Crews. The customer should report the power outage to BPUB. To report an outage, customers should call 956-983-6300 or go to https://assist.brownsville-pub.com. We ask customers to remain patient while BPUB personnel further investigates the outage.
