BPUB Announces Update to Lane Closure on Boca Chica

BROWNSVILLE, TX – To help alleviate traffic stacking, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) updated the traffic plan for a temporary lane closure on Boca Chica Boulevard from International Boulevard to Owens Road. This closure started Nov. 21 and is expected to run through April 2023 as a 16-inch waterline is installed.

During construction, traffic will be reduced to one lane until work is completed, but to ease traffic stacking at the Four Corners intersection, the location of the lane closure tapering was moved approximately 700 feet to Reina Esther Drive.

All construction dates and times are approximate, and the end date and time may vary due to the nature of weather, soil conditions and job provisions.

The 16-inch waterline will act as a future waterline loop to BPUB’s 2-million-gallon elevated storage tank under construction at the intersection of Southmost Boulevard and East 30th Street. That new elevated storage tank will replace two older water tanks: the elevated storage tank demolished in 2018 formerly located on Southmost Boulevard and the elevated storage tank at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) campus. UTRGV’s elevated storage tank is scheduled to be demolished once the new elevated storage tank is fully operational.

BPUB, Texas Department of Transportation and City of Brownsville departments coordinated on this effort to make it a safe and efficient operation. BPUB apologizes for any inconveniences the closure may cause.
