WATER & WASTEWATER

Water is vital to survival. At BPUB our two water treatment plants have the capacity to provide 40 million gallons of treated water per day, which is well above the city's current peak demand, and serve a population of 150,000. The area's phenomenal growth has challenged the Brownsville Public Utilities Board to not only provide the infrastructure to support this growth, but to also provide quality drinking water.

BPUB's water treatment plants have been recognized by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), formerly known as the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission for providing T.O.P. quality water, which exceeds state and federal standards by five times. BPUB provides water to over 40,000 taps throughout the city and continues to execute plans for the area's future water needs.

The BPUB also maintains a state of the art wastewater system through its two wastewater plants. Both Brownsville PUB wastewater treatment plants treat a combined average of 11 million gallons per day. In total, they have a design capacity to treat 22.8 million gallons per day.
The South Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Robindale Wastewater Treatment Plant give Brownsville reliable service and high quality effluent water. The plants will also be able to help alleviate the drought situation, through the water reclamation project that will produce an alternate water source for lawn irrigation and maintain resaca water levels.
