Meter tampering is not only dangerous...it's also illegal

Tampering with an electric meter can create a fire or can result in injury or death due to electrocution. In addition, tampering with a water meter can create a health hazard.
Meter Tampering
Altering your meters' functions to receive electricity or water, and tapping the utility system without paying for services, is also illegal.

These actions can result in:

  • Disconnection of services
  • Additional fees
  • Penalites
  • Police report
  • Criminal prosecution
Meters have seals to protect the meter from being opened or tampered. To report broken
seals, tampering or utility service diversions, call the BPUB Meter Tampering Hotline at
(956) 983-6600, or report tampering by clicking here.
