Meter tampering is not only dangerous ... It's also illegal
Tampering with an electric meter can create a fire or can result in injury or death from electrocution. In addition, tampering with a water meter can create a health hazard.
Altering your meters' functions to receive electricity or water and tapping the utility system without paying for services is also illegal.
These actions can result in:
- Disconnection of services
- Additional fees
- Police report
- Criminal prosecution
Meter cans have seals to protect from being opened or tampered, and meters have factory seals to prevent from being opened or tampered. To report broken seals, tampering or utility service diversions, call the BPUB Meter Tampering Hotline at (956) 983-6600 or complete the online form.
