BPUB’s comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees has long been recognized for its high value in the market. In addition to traditional benefits, such as health care, dental care and retirement, BPUB also offers a wide range of family-friendly benefits to attract, support and reward employees for helping BPUB to remain a premier community-owned utility. The following are some highlights of the benefits at BPUB.

Eligibility requirements apply to all benefits.

Paid Holidays, Vacation Leave and Sick Leave

Employees receive 15 paid holidays per year, including employee birthdays. Employees also accrue 10 hours of vacation leave and 10 hours of sick leave per month. Additional paid leave includes eligible funeral leave, jury duty and military leave.

Medical, Dental, Long-Term Disability and Life Insurance 

BPUB pays 100% of the employee’s monthly premiums for medical and dental insurance, plus a portion of these insurance premiums for dependents. BPUB also pays 100% of long-term disability and life insurance premiums for the employee. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment. 

Optional Insurance 

Optional insurance coverage available to employees includes voluntary life insurance for employees and their dependents, and short-term disability, vision and cancer insurance. 

Educational Assistance Program

BPUB’s Educational Assistance Program provides 60% reimbursement to employees for eligible undergraduate tuition, books and fees. 

Professional Development Reimbursement Program

The Professional Development Reimbursement Program reimburses full-time employees the cost of certification and licensure.

Retirement Plan 

Employees automatically become members of the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) and contribute a mandatory 7% of their gross income toward their retirement plan. For every $1 that the employee contributes, BPUB contributes $2.00. Employees are vested after five years of service. Membership in TMRS includes additional life insurance coverage for the employee. 

Optional Retirement Plan 

An optional 457(b) deferred compensation plan is available to employees. This tax-deferred retirement plan is designed as a supplement to pension and as an additional way to invest long term. 

Flexible Spending Account

Employees can save on taxes by setting aside pre-tax money from each paycheck into a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). Employees may use that money to pay for doctor visit co-pays, medications and other eligible medical expenses.

Employee Assistance Program 

BPUB provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) on a voluntary, confidential basis. EAP is a counseling and referral service designed to help employees – and their immediate families – deal with various personal and professional problems. 

Wellness Program 

The BPUB Wellness Program is an awareness campaign designed to help employees maintain a healthy lifestyle. Wellness Program activities include a weight loss challenge, annual health fair, and presentations and newsletters on fitness and nutrition. 

Credit Union 

Employees may apply for membership to the Brownsville City Employee Federal Credit Union, which provides members with a range of financial services, including share accounts and vehicle and personal loans.
