How we work with educators

The Brownsville Public Utilities Board’s aim is to remain involved in the support of the community.  Below is a list of outreaches that show support for local educators and students. 

  1. Project SHARE Scholarship:  Ten (10) $1,000 scholarships awarded annually to area high school seniors (including those from BISD). Coordinated with local high school counselors. 

  2. Financial Aid Night: We attend and participate with a booth and information about the BPUB SHARE Scholarship. Coordinated with local high school counselors. 

  3. Leo the Lineman: Leo teaches students (and adults) about staying safe around electricity.  From October 2017 to date, BPUB has presented to over 4,435 students.  Coordinated with individual campus counselors and educators. 

  4. Career on Wheels: BPUB linemen visit schools to teach students to about electrical safety.  From October 2017 to date, BPUB has presented to 4,435 students.  Coordinated with individual campus counselors.  

  5. Vello Reading Tutoring Program:  BPUB employees tutor BISDVello Tutor elementary students in reading. Coordinated through the United Way of Southern Cameron County.

  6. Drinking Water Month: Work with the Brownsville Herald to create and deliver Drinking Water Month activity posters to area schools that tells about careers, water conservation, and terminology with activities.

  7. Public Power Month: Work with the Brownsville Herald to create and deliver Public Power Month activity posters to area schools that tell about careers, energy conservation, and terminology with activities.

  8. STEAM Panel:  BPUB sends professional engineers, mechanics, information technologists and others to participate in the BISD Spring Career & Industry Forums at Porter, Veterans, Rivera and Pace Early College High Schools. BPUB professionals discuss their profession, day-to-day duties, classes needed, advice to those interested in the profession, student interest and aptitude needed for the position, colleges for this profession and pay ranges. Coordinated with BISD Career and Technical Education Dept.

  9. Brownsville Scout Government Day:  Local Girl and Boy Scout participants are able to come in and be “General Manager” for the day (or other BPUB professionals) and learn and report to the Brownsville city commission on BPUB daily operations.

  10. Resaca Explorers Curriculum:  Collaboration between the BISD, Gladys Porter Zoo and the Children’s Museum of Brownsville.  Local biologists and area educators helped to compile all materials for this educational program that discusses and teaches local students about Brownsville natural habitat.  All copyrighted materials meet or exceed the Texas Education Association standards.  (This program is on hold right now.)
